&* Ch’ang Lun, a native of Shansi, received his civil service degree in 1511 and served in office. His calligraphy was taut yet fluid, and he was also gifted at writing and painting. He wrote that he did this work at the age of 79. An inscription dated to 1564, when Ch’ang was “more than 80”, indicates he was probably born sometime before 1484. In the first part of this handscroll are prawns and fish, followed by all sorts of insects in grass, including butterflies, katydids, mantises, and dragonflies. They are all shown flying and scampering about in this scroll. Done entirely in monochrome ink, the brushwork is quite fluid and spontaneous as if the brush danced across the handscroll. &*1.
