In the Zhiyuan era (1264-1294) he was Branch Secretariat of Zhejiang and became Archivist at the Court of Imperial Sacrifices in 1302, the year he died. Famous in the early Yuan for his calligraphy, he was one of the three masters with Zhao Mengfu and Deng Wenyuan. Xianyu Shu excelled most at cursive script, which Zhao Mengfu often praised, too. This work transcribes in cursive script a poem on Water-screen Cave by a Tang poet. The brushwork is bold, rounded, and powerful. Expansive in the turns, he was unconfined by rules in applying the brush, creating the unusual and overflowing manner here.(20100406)
