He excelled at painting figures, following the style of the fourth century master Ku K'ai-chih. The last ruler of the southern T'ang, Hou-chu, praised Ku Teh-ch'ien: "In the past there was [Ku] K'ai-chih; now there is [Ku] Teh-ch’ien. The two are masters unparalleled." This work is in colors on silk. The central figure lies on a bed. He is blowing a flute. A seated figure holds a t'an-pan (a percussion instrument made of sandalwood, similar to castanets). A youth stands to one side straightening his cap. Two women are engaged in conversation. There are fie servant girls; one is dancing; the other four are waiting in attendance. A boy enters carrying a censor. The soft, delicate brushwork and the light, refined colors convey a pleasurable, leisurely atmosphere. At the end of the scroll are inscriptions by the late Ming Sung-chiang area artists Sun K'o-hung and Sung Hsü.
