&*The technique and composition of the rocks and trees in this painting are close to the feeling of Shen Chou and Wen Cheng-ming's paintings. The use of the brush is simple but strong, and the colors, which have been blended with ink, are thick and elegant and are a delight to the eye. The effect is an admirable expression of pure and peaceful seclusion. Yü Ch'iu (style name Tzu-ch'iu, sobriquet Feng-ch'iu) was born in Soochow but lived in T'ai-ts'ang, Kiangsu. He specialized in painting landscape, Buddhist subjects, and figures. Yü Ch'iu painted in several different manners; his outlined paintings of figures resemble the detailed style of Ch'iu Ying, while his landscapes in monochrome ink are derived from those of the Sung painters Ma Yüan and Hsia Kuei.
