&*Distant Peaks and Horizontal Clouds Li Liu-fang (1575-1629) Ming Dynasty Li Liu-fang (style names Mao-tsai and Ch’ang-heng; sobriquet T’an-yüan). Originally a native of She-hsien in Anhwei, he later moved to Chia-ting in Kiangsu, where he, T’ang shih-sheng, Lou chien, and Ch’eng Chia-sui (1565-1643) were called “The Four Gentlemen of Chia-ting.” At the age of 31, he passed the chu-jen civil service examination, but later refused to serve in government. His poetry, belles-lettres, calligraphy, and painting were all excellent. This painting includes dense forests and wooded slopes. Between the nearby stream and waterside kiosk, and in front of the balustrade, is a field of lotuses appearing to be blown in the wind, exposing their emerald undersides and red blossoms, The outlines and texture strokes of the hillside rocks and mountain crags are all very fresh and pure as they describe a summer day after rain. This scenery represents the refreshing atmosphere of distant and near mountain forests. &*1.
