By nature a magnaminous and broad-minded man, Shen Chou was adept in all the arts: prose-writing, poetry, calligraphy and painting. He worked in all genres of painting. This album of sketches of plants and animals was painted when Shen Chou was sixty-seven years old. The conceptions are perceptive and the brushwork uninhibited. Shhen Chou’s calligraphy in the album is particularly distinctive. According to the inscription of Kao Shih-ch’i, a later owner, this album was originally in the collection of Li Chao-heng and it is recorded in Liu-yen-chai pi-chi.
