A lofty scholar sits under a pine tree chanting to the moon. His clothing has been painted with "nail-head - rat tail" brushstrokes which are similar to those used by Ma Yuan (fl. 1190-1222). The brushwork in the trees and rocks, however, is too chiseled and exaggerated, differing markedly from the Southern Sung artist's descriptive brushwork. There is another painting in this museum, Chanting to the Moon Under Pines, which is attributed to Ma Yuan. The composition is very similar to this painting, suggesting that both paintings must have originated from the same model.
