A good landscape painter in the style of Shen Chou, he excelled at scenes of lakes, rivers, and other large-scale compositions with vigor and coherence. Wen Cheng-ming was a native of Ch’ang-chou, Kiangsu. Wen Cheng-ming’s original name was Pi, and his style name Cheng-ming. Later he was known by his style name. As he excelled in calligraphy and was noted for his paintings, Wen Cheng-ming is regarded as one of the Four Great Masters of the Ming Dynasty. On the 23rd day of the second lunar month of 1536 Cheng-ming wrote a long poem in praise of Li Ch’eng’s Wintry Grove on a Level Plain. Hsieh Shih-ch’en kept the calligraphy in his collection and in 1547 began to work on his copy of Li Ch’eng’s painting to put with Wen Cheng-ming’s poem. Thus the colophon was written eleven years before the painting was done. These characters by Wen Cheng-ming are almost five inches in size. They show some influence of Huang T’ing-chien, but the conception of the characters is rather weak. All of Wen’s characters of more than about five inches in size suffer from this defect. In1536 Wen Cheng-ming was 67 years old.
