He was known as one of the Four Masters of the Ming. In the spring of 1504, Shen Chou composed ten poems on the theme of falling flowers, which he then showed to Wen Cheng-ming. Wen, Hsü Chen-ch’ing, Lü Ch’ang, and T’ang Yin each subsequently wrote poems based on Shen’s rhyme scheme. Shen later did this painting and inscribed it with his ten poems. Wen then added the poems that he had written. Nei-their Shen’s painting nor calligraphy are dated, but Wen’s poetry mentions the sixth lunar month of the year corresponding to 1508, when Shen was 81 and Wen 38. &*故宮書畫圖錄,第十八冊,頁151-156
