He was a bold and spirited individual with a curious eye for strange phenomena. Accomplished in all the gentlemanly arts, literary composition, calligraphy and painting, he was particularly well versed in the last and wrote a book called Hua-chu, “Chats on Painting”. He was known to be still around in 1661. Very few of his paintings were collected by the emperors; this example entered the imperial collection during the Chia-ch’ing reign (1796-1821). There is an exceptionally fine-toned elegance to its striking originality. It depicts no sensational scenery, simply a swelling and two trees on a single mountain. In his inspiration and technique the artist seems to breathe the same air as that of Ch’en Hung-shou and Ts’ui Tzu-chung, two equally original contemporaries of his.
