From 1746 onwards he was employed by the emperor as a painter in the Ju-i-kuan section of the palace. He worked with Giuseppe Castiglione, Jean-Denis Attiret and others. Especially skilled at painting birds and animals, he was given a third rank title. A waterfall streams down a gorge and peach blossom and camellia screen the cliff face. Wistaria twines around an old pine tree growing on the bank where racoon dogs chase each other. Here brushwork is fine and firm and application of color is elegantly restrained.
