When at nineteen he became a Jesuit he already excelled at painting and architecture. At twenty-seven he journeyed to China as a missionary and was summoned to the Imperial Court where he served under the K’ang-hsi, Yung-cheng, and Ch’ien-lung emperors. He is known for his rendering of figures, flowers and birds, and most especially for his dogs and horses. He painted in the Chinese manner, but made use of Western techniques such as shading and perspective, and of Western colouring agents, which give his works great vividness and realism. This is an oil portrait of the “Fragrant Consort” Hsiang Fei. She is clothed in the armour and regalia of a European noble.
