秘殿珠林續編(乾清宮),頁169&*故宮書畫錄(卷八),第四冊,頁86&*故宮書畫圖錄,第八冊,頁361-362&*老樹三株,牧童坐牛背持竹杖,牧牛樹下,下臨山澗,澗水縈洞,筆極生動。隔岸一高士與之對答,童子夾布包側身而俟。 圖繪三生石故事,按三生石:唐李源與惠林寺僧圓觀友善,同遊三峽,見婦人負甕引渡,圓觀曰:「是我託身之所,更後十二年,杭州天竺寺外,與君相見也。」是夕,圓觀亡。及期,源如約往,見有牧童,即圓觀也。 &*The painting narrates the ancient tale of the Three Births Stone. A certain Li Yüan of the T'ang dynasty (618-901) had a close friend, the monk Yüan-kuan of the Hui-lin temple. Once the two traveled together to San-hsia where they encountered a woman carrying a jug of water on her back. Yüan-kuan said: "This is the place to which I entrust my body. In twelve years I will meet you outside the T'ien-chu Temple in Hangchou". That evening Yüan-kuan died. Twelve years later, Li Yüan returned to the appointed place and saw a herd boy who he recognized as Yüan-kuan. The boy sang a song: "A spirit returns to the Three Births Stone: enjoy the moon and the soughing wind, you don't need to speak. I am sorry to have caused you to come so far to meet me.
