His style name was Shu-pao, and he called himself Ch’ing-shih. As he was an orphan, his schooling was neglected. Later, when he became a pupil of Wen Cheng-ming (1470-1559), he eagerly devoted himself to reading. In his spare moments he painted excellent landscapes, orchids, and bamboo. Apricot flowers bloom in the spring. A magpie, also a harbinger of spring, has just landed on an apricot tree. The artist’s glossy, rich brushwork used in depicting the bird’s feathers is evidence of the influence of Ming masters Shen Chou and Wen Cheng-ming
