T’ao was particularly fond of the chrysanthemum, and he sung its praises in many of his verses, such as “Picking mums by the Eastern Fence / I serenely gaze at the Southern Range” and “Autumn mums bring forth their beautiful colors.” Consequently, the chrysanthemum is often shown in portraits of T’ao. As the blossom became associated with T’ao, a man of unquestioned integrity, it became emblematic of the gentleman of character. Though this work bears the signature of T’ang Yin, the drapery lines appear slightly stiff and weak, indicating the hand of a later artist. &*1.王耀庭,〈明唐寅採菊圖〉,收入王耀庭編,《淵明逸致特展圖錄》(臺北:國立故宮博物院,1988年初版),頁93-94。
