A skilled poet, calligrapher and painter, Wen is considered one of the Four Great Masters of the Ming dynasty. In painting he followed the style of Shen Chou but was also able to develop a personal style which, in turn, had a profound influence on late Ming painting. The light blues and greens used here create a tranquil, elegant atmosphere. The spatial organization is simple and lucid; in the foreground two pines and a juniper rise from the rocky riverbank while in the background landscapes fade into a level distance. A great deal of the surface is left undefined. The brushwork and general style of the painting suggest that it was executed in the artist’s later years.
