Here in the level garden area in the foreground are several buildings, in one of which is placed a statue of the Buddha. The garden, sparsely planted with only a few trees, recalls the spare beauty of Ni Tsan’s (1301?-1374) works. A narrow path behind the buildings leads to a small house on a distant hill, an elevated area that adds another level of depth, space, and complexity to the composition. Tu Ch’iung, a resident of Soochow, was well versed in classical literature and also dabbled in painting and calligraphy. He excelled at figure painting; in landscape painting he followed Tung Yüan (d. 962). Tu was also known by his sobriquet, Deer-antlered Taoist, and was also known as Mr. Tung-yüan. His writings are preserved in The Collected Writings of Tung-yüan and in several miscellaneous works.
