One, who is looking at a scroll, seems to be reading its contents out loud. The other two are sitting on either side of a ch’in, a dulcimer-like musical instrument. The three men’s facial expressions are the focal points of the painting. Hsieh Shih-ch’en, a native of Soochow, Kiangsi, excelled in landscape painting and emulated Shen Chou’s (1427-1509) style, with adaptations. He employed free, sweeping brushwork and preferred pale coloring; his figure paintings reveal a bold elegance. Hsieh successfully acquired the qualities characteristic of both the Che and Wu schools of painting.
