During the Hung-chih period (1488-1505), he served in the Jen-chih Hall and held the rank of commander in the Imperial Bodyguard, a military unit that also provided sinecures for court painters. In bird-and-flower painting, he initially studied the works of Pien Wen-chin and later emulated the paintings of famous T’ang (618-907) and Sung (960-1279) dynasty artists. He combined detailed, meticulous brushwork (kung-pi) with expressive “sketching of ideas” (hsieh-i) and achieved wonderful results. After a snowfall in this desolate scene, the river and sky are dark and gloomy, totally devoid of any light. Wild ducks dozing on the bank cringe from the cold and huddle together for warmth. Half-frozen sparrows and wild doves perch on the branches of a drooping willow tree. Lü Chi has effectively transmitted the chill of this cold winter scene. The brushwork is uncontrived and simple. Compared to some of his other works, this painting possesses a more archaic sense of beauty. &*蕭疏雪景,江天如墨。群鳧畏寒相依,多已入眠,衰柳上棲息著凍雀寒鳩。作者充分掌握真實情境的氛圍,令人體現冬日的寒意。筆墨色澤展現呂紀渾厚的風味,但更為樸實簡潔,和其別的作品相比較,更添一層古樸的趣味。(20120105)&*In this desolate scene after a snowfall, both river and sky appear as dark as ink. Several wild ducks are huddled against the cold, with a few already asleep. Freezing sparrows and cold spotted doves perch on the branches of the drooping willow tree above. Lü Ji has here fully grasped the reality of atmosphere in this scenery, allowing the viewer to feel the cold of a winter's day. The use of brush and ink reveals Lü Ji's uncontrived and natural style. With even greater abbreviation and succinctness, it differs from his other works by adding another layer of archaic simplicity.(20120105)&*荒涼とした雪景、墨のような空と川。群れ集う鳥たちは凍えながら互いに身を寄せ合い、その多くが眠りに落ちている。冬枯れの柳には寒さに震えるスズメやハトがとまっている。実際の冬景色とその雰囲気を巧みに捉えた本作は、観る者に冬の厳しい寒さを感じさせる。筆墨の色合いには呂紀特有の重厚な味わいがあるが、より簡潔素朴な表現となっており、他の作品と比べると、古樸な趣がより一層感じられる。(20120105)
