However, few of his works survive. This painting depicts some buildings fenced in by the shore of a pond lined with willows. A scholar drags a staff as he makes his way back slowly on the small path that zigzags through the grassy fields and tree-lined hills. The brushwork here is exceptionally soft and the coloring is also warm and elegant, fully expressing the lush moisture of the land in spring. The tender green and blue colors are complemented by an earthy ochre that fills the landscape with an idyllic atmosphere as everything seems to burst forth here with a sense of potential and renewal in springtime.
