石渠寶笈初編(御書房),下冊,頁1112 &*故宮書畫錄(卷五),第三冊,頁225-226 &*故宮書畫圖錄,第四冊,頁293-294&*倪瓚(西元一三0一至一三七四年),字元鎮,號雲林,迂翁。家富饒,築清閟閣,蓄古書畫。善山水,為元四大家之一。 本幅寫新篁側出,竹葉俱呈弧狀,不寫雨而雨意盎然。幅左題句言及:「哭君我有淚淋漓,正似湘江雨後枝。」元代文人畫思想鼎盛,畫家多假物象暗寄故國之思,復因逸筆簡率,時人乃得於畫幅空處題贊抒懷,益增作品畫外之趣。此幀墨竹題語多達十則,即為文人畫的具體印證。&*Ni Tsan, a native of Wu-hsi, Kiangsu, came from a wealthy family with a rich collection of art. He was a skilled painter of landscapes and is considered one of the Four Masters of the Yüan. Fresh bamboo grows from the side, its leaves described with semi-circular forms that suggest the weight of spring rain. A couplet inscribed on the painting expands the emotions of the scene: "Crying for you my tears are moist, like a branch after rain along the Hsiang River." The Yüan scholars entrusted their feelings to the landscape, sometimes sentiments for the fallen dynasty, and expressed them in painting. Simple compositions were often designed so that empty areas could accommodate poems and inscriptions which could add another form of lyricism to the painting. Ni Tsan's ink bamboo is a perfect example of the expressive art of the scholar.
