One winter a snowstorm hit Lo-yang. The magistrate went out to inspect and saw everybody busy clearing the snow. Coming to Yüan's place, the path was buried in snow. Fearing that Yüan had died, he went in and found him lying in bed nearly frozen. When asked why he hadn't come out, Yüan said, "In a snowstorm, people starve, so I did not want to bother you." Impressed by his virtue, the magistrate made him a Sage. This painting shows a cold, snowy countryside. The magistrate is in the cart as a servant peers over Yüan's fence. Quick brushwork is complemented by ink washes. Vibrant strokes suggest the clothing folds. Though attributed to Yen Hui, the style here differs, suggesting the hand of a later artist.
