Since his paintings followed after the old masters, they appear archaic but not imitative. He excelled at landscapes and birds-and-flowers in the fine-line manner. His skill matched the beauty of Sung dynasty paintings in the same genre. Here, a hawk has turned in mid-flight and prepares to swoop down on a hapless thrush crying out as it scrambles to flee its pursuer. The artist has effectively captured the tension and action of the scene as the determined hunter narrows in on the victim. The brushwork is extremely detailed and the coloring subdued, much in the manner of Sung dynasty painting.&*1.譚怡令,〈元王淵鷹逐畫眉〉,收入譚怡令編,《畫裡珍禽》(臺北:國立故宮博物院,1988年十月初版),頁89-90。
