He excelled at figure painting. In his later years his avocations were studying ancient inscriptions and seal script calligraphy. This long handscroll illustrates the poem Making Clothes by Hsieh Hui-lien (397-433), which relates a story of women making clothes for their men away at war. In somber black and white, the entire scroll is limned in light ink in the uncolored outline (pai-miao) method. The thirty-two women depicted here reflect T'ang (618-907) ideals of beauty with their rounded faces and figures and full gowns. Their faces bear expressions of worried sadness, as if in these ever-colder days sending clothing to their faraway spouses is not enough to dispel their anxiety.
