One of his hao (sobriquets) was Yün-lin. Genteel and pure, he was of a solitary disposition and a devotee of the classics. In a single curve of bamboo, the artist captures a chaste and simple harmony. With several brushstrokes, he grasps its tensil delicacy. In executing bamboo, Ni has not simply transmitted form, but arrested its very essence and disposition. But there are those who insist on criticizing Ni's bamboo as resembling water-reeds, what can be clone with such spectators. This painting was rendered in the second month of the year 1374, when Ni was 74 years old. The artist died nine months later.
