But you don’t care how your possessions rank against those of others, and are satisfied if their is fish on the table at meals.” A farmhouse sits among fields on the shore of a lake. A servant is sweeping outside the gate. The master of the house is peacefully sitting in front of the house. Beside the dwelling stretch the hundred acres of fertile fields. The painting is rapidly sketched with a fine brush. The fields are treated with light ink and repeated washes, and the entire painting resonates with the harmonies of elegant blandness. It was probably painted when T’ang Yin was around 40. His inscription reads from left to right. Nothing is known of Tseng Mou-hua, although another of T’ang Yin’s paintings bears an inscription by him: when T’ang was 36, he accompanied Wang Ao to the Ko-feng T’ai in P’ei-hsien and did a painting called “The True Scenery of Ko-feng T’ai”. Tseng inscribed this painting and signed his colophon “The scholar Tseng Mou-hua”. The latter painting is recorded in An Ch’i’s catalogue, Mo-Yuan hui-kuan lu.
