Serving as a Hanlin Academician-in-Waiting, he helped compile The Veritable Records of Emperor Wuzong. However, he later quit and returned home, focusing on art instead. He passed away at the age of 90 by Chinese reckoning. Talented in poetry, prose, calligraphy, and painting, he was a leader of mid-Ming Suzhou art circles. Gifted at many scripts, he was best at small regular and running scripts. In the former he followed the fourth-century style of the Two Wangs (Wang Xizhi and Wang Xianzhi), while in running script he learned from those of such calligraphers as Zhiyong, Su Shi, Huang Tingjian, and Mi Fu. The running script here is powerful yet reserved, the characters restrained and pure.
