His works are dated to the period from 1766 to 1791, and he painted figures and birds-and-flowers in the fine-line manner. In ink and colors, Yang Ta-chang here has painted firmiana trees among bamboo and rocks, where a group of birds has gathered. These brilliantly colored phoenixes, cranes, and mandarin ducks symbolize happiness and good fortune. This scroll is thus evidence of the popularity of auspicious subject matter and this particular style at the time.
