A natural and easy-going talent, he was gifted at poetry, his works both magnificent and beautiful. Full of dramatic emotions, they reflect the style of the period, Lu being an important poet of the Southern Song. This letter from 1170 was written to a friend, Zeng Feng (style name Yuanbo). The calligraphy is rich and full of dynamism, the brush manner in the characters deriving from that of Su Shi (sobriquet Dongpo) and ultimately tracing to the solid and steady running script of the Tang calligrapher Yan Zhenqing, making this a typical letter written in Lu’s middle years and later. Lu You himself once wrote, “In studying calligraphy, learn from Yan [Zhenqing].” In his literary collection are also many works written as a “colophon to Dongpo’s writing,” showing how closely he studied the calligraphy of Su Shi. This letter demonstrates in concrete terms the degree to which Lu You learned from the styles of Yan Zhenqing and Su Shi in his running script.(20101015)&*1.侯怡利,〈尺牘〉,收入何傳馨主編,《文藝紹興:南宋藝術與文化•書畫卷》(臺北:國立故宮博物院,2010年十月初版一刷),頁353。
