He was a native of Kiangsu and the grandson of the Ming dynasty (1358-1644) scholar-artist, Wang Shih-chen. Wang Chien served as Prefect of Lien-chou. He was especially learned in art history and included among the “Four Wangs” of the early Ch’ing dynasty. Distant peaks rise in rows above clouds and mists as waterfalls make different turns. Nestled atop a flat hill stand storied pavilions. Far below, in the foreground, an old man with a walking stick crosses a bridge as a boy carrying a lute accompanies him. The colors are attractively handled, and the composition is methodical. Only in the moss dots and depiction of water does the brush tend to lag conspicuously.
