石渠寶笈初編(御書房),下冊,頁1161&*故宮書畫錄(卷五),第三冊,頁508&*故宮書畫圖錄,第十冊,頁31-32&* 羅牧(西元一六二二-一七○四年尚在),江西寧都人,字飯牛,僑居南昌。能詩善飲,又善製茶,工書畫山水。水淮間亦有祖之者,世所稱江西派是也。 本幅用生紙濕筆,寫江邊小景,筆生辣而直勁,為八十三歲時作。 &*Soughing Forests in the Valley Luo Mu (1622-after 1704) Ch’ing Dynasty Luo Mu (style name Fan-niu) was a native of Ning-tu in Kiangsu, but resided in Nan-ch’ang. He excelled at poetry, loved wine, was adept at preparing tea leaves, and was skilled at calligraphy and landscape painting. He had many followers in the Yangtze and Huai river areas that became collectively known as the Kiangsi school. A brush drenched with ink has been wielded without restraint in this painting. The untreated paper has soaked up the ink to produce this intimate view of a river with trees. One might say that while the brushwork possesses a quality of directness, it retains a touch of rawness. The work was completed in 1704, when the artist was 82 years of age.
