&*Landscape in the Style of Fan K’uan T’ang Tai (1673 to nid-18th c.) Ch’ing Dynasty T’ang Tai was a Manchurian who served in the Imperial Household and excelled at landscape painting. Praised at court, he was bestowed by the K’ang-hsi Emperor (r.1662-1722) with honor as the “Top Painter”. Although T’ang Tai studied landscape painting from Wang Yüan-ch’i (1642-1715), he followed his own path using a pure and elegantly refined style. In this work after the style of Fan K’uan (10th-11th c.), the shape of the mountains, the arrangement of the clusters of trees on the mountaintops, the texture strokes for the rocks and slopes, and the fine “moss dots” all reflect elements of Fan Kuan’s style. However, the mountains here are overly rounded and they appear slightly stiff. &*1.
