&*Sung k'o, a native of Soochow, based his calligraphy on that of the Wei and Chin. He was also profoundly influenced by the styles of Chung Yu and Wang Hsi-chih. Assiduously studying "Model Essay for Draft Cursive," he transformed the simple features of draft cursive into an archaic and elegant manner. Later critics wrote that he broke away from the style of previous Yuan dynasty calligraphers. This work is a transcription of poetry by T'ao Yuan-ming (365-427). Elements of draft cursive have been introduced into the cursive script here. Although undated, the reserved quality of the brushwork is similar to his early style and unlike the quick and sharp manner of his later years. Thus, this is probably an early work by Sung K'o.&*1.
