&*Chou-li-p'an-t'e-chia Wu Pin (active 1573-1619) Ming dynasty Wu Pin was a native of P'u-t'ien, Fukien. Residing in Nanking, he acquired fame as a calligrapher and painter during the Wan-li reign (1573-1619). Wu Pin painted landscape, figures, and buddhist subjects, establishing individual, unusual styles in each genre. This is the eighth leaf of Wu Pin's album “The Twenty-five kinds of Perfect Understanding of Truth Illustrated by the Buddhist Deities at Śurańgama Assembly”, depicting ‘the voidness of breath’, Chou-li-p'an-t'e-chia's understanding of nose -- one of the six sense-organs. The figures of this album are portrayed as foreigners of the West, and the landscape elements are depicted with qualities of exaggeration and bizzareness. The brushwork is rich and mature and suggests that the album is a late work of the artist.&*1.
