This work shows a skiff in the lower left corner with a cliff in the upper right corner, and it thereby shows only a small part of the Red Cliff along with some rocks seen at close range. In the boat looking back and up is Su Shih (1036-1101), the author of the famous "Ode on the Red Cliff" dealing with his trip to this site. Though only part of the Red Cliff is shown, its unique features can still be seen. Thus, representing the essence of the cliff, the scenery stands out even more. The swirling and frothy waves reflect the turbulent journey of the skiff described in Su's ode as well as the insignificance of man in nature, which Su came to appreciate during exile to this region. The artist (and Su Shih) both romanticized and visualized the Red Cliff.
