He is included among the Four Great Masters of the Ch’ing Dynasty. The painting depicts a temple in the midst of a grove of pines by the river. Clouds rise from the mountains, while the landscape is so densely painted that it could not ‘contain a needle.’ Both sky and river are white, providing a dramatic contrast of positive and negative space. In painting the mountains, Wang Yűan-ch’i used a slanting brushstroke and ink dabs, with occasional light ink washes for emphasis. The pine trees and bamboo are painted with extraordinarily decisive, knife-like brushstrokes. Wang Yűan-ch’i painted the landscape when he was 58 years old.
