&* Wang Yűan-ch’i (style-name Mao-ching; sobriquet Lu-t’ai) was a native of T’ai-ts’ang, Kiangsu. A grandson of Wang Shih-min (1592-1680), Wang Yűan-ch’i is included among the Four Great Masters of the Ch’ing Dynasty. He received his chin-shih civil degree in 1670 and served as Superintendent of the Capital Granaries. From the woods and streams one can imagine the lush vegetation and cloudy moistness of the original river landscape. The top of the highest mountain, emerging from the clouds, is encircled by smaller peaks. The artist has depicted the actual site of a river hamlet with summer rain just clearing. The scroll was completed in early spring. Wang Yűan-ch’i records that he had to loosen his brush and thaw his ink before he could paint. Consequently the ink appears slightly congealed. Wang Yűan-ch’i painted the landscape when he was sixty-seven years old. &*1.
