As the rain falls, everyone in the garden holds up an umbrella. Beyond the walls, a group of girls hurries back from mulberry picking, covering their heads with their sleeves. &*此套作品原無畫家款題與紀年，根據活計清檔，乾隆元年（1736）乾隆皇帝曾經要求畫家陳枚要趕出一件〈四月景〉，以便於懸掛。從此件畫中人物的表現以及畫傘的模式與陳枚人物畫風接近，可能即與此畫關係密切。畫中庭園樓閣的佈置與焦秉貞的〈山水樓閣〉構圖接近，兩者應有稿本運用關係。而以庭園景致描寫單一月份面貌的做法，雖與傳統月令圖作相關，但此畫所強調的園林風貌更顯別具新意。&*This set of paintings does not bear any signature, inscription, or date of execution. However, according to archival records of the Ch’ing court, the Ch’ien-lung Emperor in the first year of his reign (1736) requested the court painter Ch’en Mei (ca. 1694-1745) to rush the completion of a painting by the title “Scenery of the Fourth Month” so that it could be put on display. Furthermore, the representation of figures here along with the depiction of parasols is similar to the style of Ch’en Mei’s figures, indicating that perhaps this painting and the record are closely related. The arrangement of buildings and courtyards is also similar to that found in Chiao Ping-chen’s (fl. ca. 1689-1726) “Landscape and Buildings,” suggesting that cross-referencing by the artists of these works probably took place in some form.
