Originally a Taoist who lived during the T'ang dynasty, he resided in seclusion at the Chung-t'iao Mountains of Heng-chou. In his travels, he developed a reputation as an immortal and was reverently known as "Old Chang," or Chang Kuo-lao. The popular image of Chang pictures him carrying a basket and riding backwards on a white donkey, traveling the clouds and reforming humanity. Each night, after riding his donkey for thousands of miles, he would fold it up like a piece of paper. The following day, before setting out, he would pour water on the paper to transform it. Here, a peach-tree of immortality appears suspended from a cliff, its roots laid bare and branches twisting. Peaches grow in clusters, beneath which sits Chang. Hoary with shaggy eyebrows, he wears the long robes and sash of a scholar and holds a staff. Two female immortals stand in attendance; one adds incense to a tripod, while the other holds a ju-I scepter. A crane stands amid the bamboo and fungi grow among rocks. The refined vitality of the brushwork and color convey a sense of antique elegance.
