(20120407)&* The old label for this scroll reads, “Authentic Work of Birds and Flowers by the Ming Emperor Xuanzong.” In monochrome ink, it depicts flowers by a stony brook with a pair of sparrows. The reverse halo method of outlining and shading petals brings out their pure whiteness. Fine brushwork delineates the leafy details, combining fine-line and sketchy manners. The regular-script inscription reads, “Imperial production of Xuande,” with a seal impression for “Treasure of Wuying Palace.” These, however, differ from others of Xuanzong. This work also has collection seals of Xiang Yuanbian (1525-1590) and colophons by Shen Shixing (1535-1614) and Hua Yun (1488-1560), all spurious additions. This work is thus probably an early Qing imitation.(20120407)
