He excelled at painting landscapes, an art he learned from the Ming dynasty artist, Sung Hsü (1525-after 1605). The dates of Chao Tso’s birth and death are uncertain, but his works date between the twenty-year period (1603-1629,). His paintings of rainy scenes done in the style of Mi Fei (1051-1107), possess a wonderful quality. The tide has just come in, and it seems that one almost can hear the sound of waves lapping against the shore.
