(20100710)&* This painting depicts groups of deer wandering among mountains, drinking water, gazing, or just resting. The word for “deer” in Chinese is a homonym for “official pay,” thus symbolizing government position. The pine trees in the painting also represent longevity, and the spirit fungus of long life as well as the rare white deer in the landscape reflect auspiciousness, imbuing the entire work with a sense of blessing. The clean and bright “blue-and-green” coloring here along with the method of depicting the pines and rocks closely resemble the background added by the Qing court painter Fang Cong to “Ewe” by Giuseppe Castiglione (1688-1766), suggesting the relationship between this work and the Qing dynasty (1644-1911) court style.(20100710)
