- 內容摘要說明：In May at Chiu-nih a man surnamed Lim who owns a house right opposite our chapel rented it to a man called Li. The Latter began to dye cotton so put up three high poles on the chapel side of the road and close beside our wall. These two men were going to the priests who live only a few doors away. No doubt there was plotting etc. as the whole town said it was wrong. This can easily be seen as the chapel would have as good a right to put up poles on their side…The preacher at once exhorted the men not to put them up. Weeks passed' then the headman told them it would not do…they headed not at last an accusation was sent in to the sub-prefect. Our deed was handed him etc. So he sent several constables to order the pales to be removed. Backed by the priests they paid no attention again an accusation was sent in by our people and the mandarin sent his chief secretary to see. The men cleared out for that day…The secretary reported to the official the correctness of the converts statement and the two men were ordered to be seized. On hearing of this the priests ran to and fro and to a Portuguese store keeper for money to bribe the constables so that they would not seize the men. The fellows took the money' but in a few days they were off again and brought the men as prisoners into the Ya-men. On the 30th last the examination of both parties took place. The men were told to go back and pull up the poles at once or they would be imprisoned' punished and have their goods confiscated etc. They ran home and took the pales out in the midst of hundreds jeering and sneering at the priests. So yesterday the case was settled. Victory! Victory!! For weeks the priests and a few who thought to get gain from them paraded in front of the chapel swaggering with conceit. Now sneered at all' despised and halted by the two men they are crestfallen' fallen ye vile plotters. I know thy works. Justice will yet again overtake thy abominations.
