石渠寶笈初編(重華宮),下冊,頁806&*故宮書畫錄(卷五),第三冊,頁518&*故宮書畫圖錄,第十冊,頁147-148&* 王翬(西元一六三二-一七一七),常熟人。字石谷,號耕煙散人。清暉主人。烏目山人,劍門樵客。山水得王時敏指授,為清四大家之一。 康熙壬午七十一歲畫,疏林之下,茅屋數間,一人讀書坐堂上,兩牛傍籬,一立一臥。隔水平坡曼衍,丘陵起伏,平坡上有大小牛四頭,或漫步,或嚙草,覺牛背斜陽。層層暮景,意趣絕佳,為仿唐寅之作。 &* Wang Hui was a native of Ch’ang-shu, Kiangsu. He was a protégé of Wang Shih-min and both master and pupil are deemed in the Four Great Masters of the Ch’ing dynasty. The picture depicts a beautiful scenery of woods and buffalos with a river and riverside cottages in the foreground. It suggests at once a sunset scene of wooded banks where the herd and herdsmen have spent a day and are about to leave. Wang Hui was talented in copying the works of the past masters. In an inscription on the picture, the artist said: “T’ang Yin made an excellent copy of the lost Cattle and a Wooded Plain by Wen Tung. This is based on T’ang’s work.” The painting is dated 1702 when Wang Hui was seventy years old.
